Up North Nollywood Movie
I can bear a witness that truly the movie Up North is indeed an amazing movie that worth a little of our precious time as it contains different elements such as politics, humor, love, family, comedy, and of course education. The movie was directed by Tope Oshin and comprises lots of our most wanted on screen actors and actresses with the likes of Bankole Wellington (Bassey Otuekong), Kanayo. O. Kanayo (Chief Otuekong), Ibrahim Suleiman (Sadiq), Michelle Dede (Idara), Adesua Etomi and many more others.
Almost everyone who has taken part in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) would agree that it is a treasure trove of all kinds of stories. Up North tells a pretty great one that manages to draw on some nostalgia about time in service, but goes beyond that to chart its own course and tell a truly heartwarming and lovable tale.
The plot is about Bassey, an engineering graduate from MIT, fitness nerd, and imminent CEO of Deon Constructions, but who in his millionaire father’s estimation, remains deeply irresponsible. Bassey, unlike his genial older sister, Idara, is seen to be petulant, and in one early scene barging into his father’s office stone-high, clearly unready for the leadership role ahead.

As a corrective measure, Bassey was sent to endure the compulsory National Youth Service Orientation camp; worse, in a state up in the country’s northern region: Bauchi. Despite initial shock and reluctance, he turns up oddly adaptable, and quickly establishes a friendship in camp against the odds. While at camp in Bauchi, he meets and becomes friends with Sadiq and that relationship, and the experiences he has in the course of camp stay begin to work on him and make him more responsible. In a more dramatic twist, Bassey becomes unwilling to ‘redeploy’ home to a lucrative offer to pursue a business merger and public listing for Deon Constructions, also underlined by a potential arranged marriage for him.
Now fully in Bauchi, he conceived to establish his new life, and ‘place of primary assignment’ as a school teacher. Through a brilliantly executed social influencer tie in, he exposes the audience to the beauty and richness of Bauchi just as he exposed himself to the state he grows his followers on social media through a documentary vlog, also for being smoking handsome helped increased viewers. Still a fitness nerd, and regular street runner, Bassey finds himself encountering and skipping many hurdles in his Northern adventure. He put together an athletic team; fell out with parents within the community; and at the same time gets caught up in romantic tension with a co-worker at the school
Crucially the movie Up North with Bassey as a stand-in was for the average Nigerian consciousness, the movie is not only eye-opening; but turns into a redemptive experience as the north of Nigeria rarely comes alive on the big screen on the scale projected in this movie; when it does appear, in both popular and film discourse, the region is typically crudely represented as dusty, dry, and politically volatile. For enlightenment the movie streams scenic shots, which combines sweeping aerial views of beautiful landscapes and magical tourist sites, then, perhaps represents a necessary intervention, an alternative reality, just as if to say the North is a lot bigger and interesting than what we know it to be.

As a way of enhancing tourism in Nigeria, the movie featured the viewer to a unique Northern festival and massive fanfare at the Emir’s palace. Camels strut through a mammoth crowd; gun shots echo celebration in the air; and native musicians sing and play local instruments to create a feverish atmosphere; a pure African spectacle.
However, educating students in the north wasn’t an easy task for Bassey as the parents of the school girls where he served were still to differentiate the combination of classroom learning and extra-curricular athletics which took the intervention of Bassey, rich, sophisticated and presented in the full glare of a savior-settler, also to get an obvious point across through the local ‘Sharia court
To expatiate explicitly, the movie was seen to help pass message across the Northern to help defend every girl their right to education and every other activities of the society, which makes extra school curriculum activities included.
Just as countless Nollywood films gone before, the problem with the movies lies within the story. It just wasn’t stimulating and captivating enough. The modest, feel-good objectives of the project guarantee that nothing is ever really at any risk including the lead character’s arc. Bassey completed the movie essentially the same way he started it, only with a different love interest in tow. Nevertheless the movie UP NORTH is truly a boom
